Albemarle police are looking for a suspect who they say shot at an officer earlier today.

Police received a call about a shooting at T.E. White Drive near Elizabeth Avenue around noon. When officers arrived, they found a Gold 2002 Chevy truck crashed, with no driver around. The vehicle had a bullet hole in the passenger side of the door, police said. Shortly thereafter, a person walked up claiming to be the driver of he truck, but would not give law enforcement any info on the shooting. Police said neighbors claimed to have seen someone driving a black Lexus shooting at the truck.

Information was sent out to other officers in the area, and Officer Blake Evans made contact with the vehicle on N.C. Highway 24-27 near Taco Bell. As Evans turned on his blue lights and siren, a passenger in the Lexus stood up through the sunroof and began shooting at Evans with a high powered rifle, striking his vehicle in three different places, police said, once on the driver’s side windshield, once on the driver’s side hood and once in the driver’s side grill that damaged the radiator making his car inoperable.

While the suspect was shooting at Evans, a stray bullet struck another vehicle in the windshield causing the bullet to ricochet and hit the driver causing non-life threatening injuries. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and released.

According to witnesses near the incident, the person shooting from the Lexus was described as a black male wearing dreads.
