Shelva Jean Pickler

Miss Shelva Jean Pickler, 81, of New London passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2018 in Atrium Health Northeast, Concord.
Her funeral service will be 11 AM Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at First Baptist Church of New London, NC with Rev. Brandon King and Rev. David Ayers officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care of Albemarle.
Born August 6, 1937 in Stanly County, NC she was the daughter of the late Claude Franklin Pickler and Mary Earnest Poplin Pickler.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of New London, NC and was a retired teacher with the Albemarle City Schools with 17 years of service.
She graduated as Salutatorian of the 1955 Class of New London High School and also graduated from Appalachian State University. She also attended George Peabody College in Nashville, TN.
Miss Pickler was very active in her church where she was Co-Director of JOY Makers for 13 years, Sunday School teacher for 50 years, Sunday School Director for the Children Department, served formerly as Chairman of the Music Committee, Music Director, Pianist and choir member. She also served on the Budget and Finance Committee and Nominating Committee and as Church Historian.
Miss Pickler had 67 years of perfect attendance for Sunday School.
She was a member of the Friends of Children Committee for the NC Baptist Children’s Homes and a member of the I. G. Greer Society for the Baptist Children’s Homes of NC. Additionally she served as a messenger to the Baptist Association and was a member of the GA’s ad YWA’s.
Miss Pickler is survived by her sister Daphine Poplin Pickler of the home as well as by a number of cousins.
