Albemarle guard Shada Wall provided a team-high 21 points off the bench to help guide the Bulldog women’s basketball squad to a 66-41 home win over South Davidson Tuesday night.

While both teams got off to a slow start from the field, the Bulldogs (13-1, 6-0) overcame an early 16-13 deficit and never looked back.

With the loss, the Wildcats (6-7, 4-2) fell to below .500 overall, though they are still tied for third place in Yadkin Valley conference standings.

“It was a good win,” Albemarle coach Eric Davis said. “South Davidson is a good team.”

Davis was quick to mention the achievement of senior Zycoria Tillman, becoming the fifth women’s basketball player in school history to reach the 1,000-point club. Tillman had five points in what became Albemarle’s third consecutive victory.

“I’ve watched her work hard for four years,” he said. “She has put in a lot of time and is going to do very well at the next level.”

Senior guards Kiana Ridley and Tameya Newton each notched nine points for the Bulldogs and junior Kristyn McLendon added nine of her own. Point guard Armani Baldwin scored seven of her 10 in a dominant 26-point fourth quarter that ensured the win for Albemarle.

Leading the Wildcats was senior forward Mallory Gardner, who had 14 in the contest. Fellow senior Gracie Apple recorded 12 while guard Bayli Medlin added nine.

Albemarle was 14-for-21 from the foul line and also racked up 21 points from behind the arc; the Wildcats made six of 11 attempts from the free-throw stripe.

The Bulldogs will look to hit the 7-0 mark in conference play when they challenge Uwharrie Charter Academy (6-8, 2-4) at 6 p.m. Thursday in Albemarle. The Eagles defeated winless West Montgomery 41-27 on the road Tuesday night.

South Davidson is set for a road contest at North Rowan at 6 p.m. Friday. The Cavaliers (5-6, 3-2) suffered a loss at Gray Stone Tuesday night.
