Chuck Morehead and Rock Creek park pool basins are in need of repair and the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department hopes to be able to repair them within two years.

Aquatics Supervisor Payne Caulder said best practices are for pool basins to be plastered and cracks repaired every 10-15 years. Chuck Morehead has not been repaired since it was built in the 1980s, while Rock Creek’s basin was last repaired about 10 years ago.

The damaged pool basins can create an increased risk management concern for pool patrons due to the roughness of the bottom of the pools, according to a recent Parks and Recreation pool memo sent to Albemarle City Council. This can lead to blisters, abrasion or small cuts to the feet, the memo stated.

Parks and Recreation is in talks with three vendors about repairing the pool and getting quotes. Caulder said the cost should be around $100,000 for both pools.

“Our hope is to get Chuck Morehead done by the opening of the season,” said Caulder, which would be Memorial Day weekend.

Rock Creek Pool, which usually opens the first week schools close in early June, is expected to be repaired before the 2020 pool season.

But Caulder said both pools are planning to open on time this year.

It will take about a week to repair both pools, said Caulder.

Chuck Morehead got a new filtration system 2-3 years ago, Caulder said, and the filtration system would not be affected by any loose particles of plaster that break away from the basin.
