The Oakboro Regional Museum of History reopened Jan. 14 following the Christmas holidays. The current rotating exhibit, “Pottery by Judith Williams of Stony Run Pottery,” and the window display of uniforms and information about Oakboro native Myrna Hathcock, will continue throughout January.

Williams became interested in pottery more than 10 years ago. She began taking continuing education classes at Montgomery Community College and continues to attend classes in pottery there.

Her pottery has been exhibited in Wadesboro and Albemarle previously and when Falling Rivers Art Gallery reopens, she will have an exhibit there.

The exhibit in Oakboro includes examples of salt-fired, raku and a type of pottery called neriage, in which she uses clay she colors herself.

The window display contains uniforms of Lt. Col. Eva Myrna Hathcock and information about her years in the military.

In 1940, Hathcock entered the Woman’s Medical Specialist Corps as a physical therapist with the rank of second lieutenant.

She retired as a lieutenant colonel after 25 years of service, including World War II, the Korean War and tours in Europe and Japan.

After retirement, she joined the physical therapy department at Stanly Memorial Hospital as one of its first members.
Oakboro Museum is open 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday and 10 a.m. to noon Thursday.
