Commissioners make board appointments

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Stanly County Board of Commissioners, vacancies on three different local boards were filled.

With the resignation of Wayne Sasser from the Economic Develoment Commission due to his election to the North Carolina House of Representatives, a vacancy existed in District 3.

Commissioners voted 5-2 to confirm former commissioner and chairman Joseph Burleson to the position. Vice chairman Ashley Morgan nominated Burleson for the position, while Commissioner Bill Lawhon nominated former commissioner Tony M. Dennis. Lawhon and Tommy Jordan voted for Dennis while the remainder of the board voted for Burleson.

Burleson will serve the remainder of the term until Sept. 4, 2020.

The Piedmont Community Board of Cardinal Innovations Healthcare also needed a citizen representative from Stanly for its board.

Morgan nominated Delton Russell for the position, while Lawhon nominated Scott Efird. The board voted 6-1 to approve Russell for the board, with Lawhon the lone vote for Efird.

Former chairman of the board of Stanly County Chamber of Commerce Eddie Shimpock was unanimously nominated by the board to serve on the Centralina Economic Development Commission.

The board also received a presentation from Stanly County Emergency Management Services director Michael Smith and senior paramedic Dale Chandler regarding the progress of the C.A.R.E.S program. The program, Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival, is a database which tracks outcomes for cardiac attack cases for the purpose of increasing the chances of a patient surviving.
