In a battle for second place in the Yadkin Valley Conference, the South Stanly Rebel Bulls broke the tie for second with a 64-54 home win Thursday over the Albemarle Bulldogs.

Jaquez Cooke led South (12-8, 10-2 YVC) with 17 points while Jacorian Legrande added 12 despite fouling out early in the fourth.

South’s bench also outscored the Albemarle reserves 18-8 in the game, with Duncan McSwain and Jadius Jones each adding eight points.

“We got a great effort from all nine guys,” South coach Sean Whitley said. “I’m proud of the team victory; Albemarle is a good basketball team so you’re always happy when you can come away with a win against them.”

South trails North Rowan by one and a half games heading into Friday’s road game at South Davidson (2-15, 2-8).

Albemarle hosts West Montgomery (8-8, 4-7) also on Friday night.
