Woman killed in car accident Monday night

A woman died Monday night after she was ejected from a car a few miles from Albemarle.
At 9:54 p.m. a Ford Mustang was traveling south along N.C. Highway 138 when it crossed the center line, over-corrected and ran off the road on the right into the southbound ditch. The vehicle then overturned and came to rest in the northbound lane, according to N.C. Highway Patrol.
Driver David Hiatt was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and front seat passenger Charles Lamb was transported to CHS NorthEast in Concord.
The backseat passenger, Mary Coulter Simpson, 52, of Norwood, was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS and Dr. Lori Shue.
State trooper D.S. Paige investigated the collision that happened about 3.3 miles south of Albemarle near Mauldin Road.
Hiatt and Lamb were wearing seat belts. Speed was a contributing factor in the accident, according to the Highway Patrol office.
An official incident report was not available to indicate how fast the vehicle was traveling.
