Although early in the prom season, Richfield had its first prom recently at Richfield Fire Department.

The band Valhalla provided music from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s to guests who were age 60 and older at the event sponsored by the IMPACT youth group of Richfield.

IMPACT (Influencing My Peers as A Christian Teen), a youth group less than 2 years old sponsored by Methodist churches, meets at Richfield United Methodist Church weekly. Members chose the prom as a way giving back to this age group who has been supportive.

IMPACT Youth Minister Tyler Smith addressed the attendees.

“Our youth have received so much encouragement from the seniors in this community,” he said. “We want to honor you tonight with a great evening of fun, food, fellowship and dancing. We want you to know how very special you are to IMPACT youth.”

Youth greeted guests as they entered and signed a guestbook. They were shown to a table and served a meal.

The fire department and tables were adorned with decorations of blue, silver, black and fresh flowers. A photo booth was set up where pictures were taken to capture the magic of the evening. These were given to the guest as a memento.

Punch and coffee were available throughout the night as guests danced the night away.

For those without a partner, the youth filled in. There were 104 adults in attendance, with 18 youth and adult leaders assisting.

Tuxedos and formals along with outfits from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s were represented.

The event was free for participants and was financially supported by Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Matton’s Grove United Methodist Church and a grant from the Uwharrie District of the United Methodist Church.
