The West Stanly men’s basketball team needed overtime on Friday night, but got clutch free throws in the extra period to earn a 62-59 Rocky River Conference win at Anson County.

Ethan Conner led three in double figures for the Colts (13-10, 6-3 RRC) with 16 points. Austin Medlin added 13 including 7-of-8 at the free throw line, while West center Hayden Greene added all 12 of his points in the second half and overtime.

Lance Shuler led the Bearcats (8-13, 4-5) with 17, while Kobe Teal added 13.

West Stanly led the majority of the game until the Bearcats rallied to lead by four late. Back-to-back baskets by Greene along with two free throws from the senior center sent the game to overtime.

Medlin’s three-point play in overtime put the Colts up by one. West then got a stop on defense and drew a foul second later. Conner hit two foul shots in the final 11 seconds to put the Colts up three.

“We struggled at times rushing things on offense and it wasn’t our best defensive effort consistently, but we finally got a few stops when we needed them,” Colts coach John Thompson said. “(Conner) came off the bench, giving us some much needed offense, and down the stretch they struggled guarding Hayden which opened some things up for other guys as well.”

West wraps up the regular season on Friday when the Colts host Mount Pleasant (19-4, 7-2 RRC). A win for the Colts would put West and Mount in a tie for second in the standings.
