In observance of Black History Month, the Stanly County Historical Society, the Stanly County History Center and the E.E. Waddell Center will present a program “Notable African Americans of Stanly County” on Feb. 24.
The program will be at 2:30 p.m. at the E.E. Waddell Center, at 621 Wall St., Albemarle.
The program is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Presenter Lewis P. Bramlett will share information about black men and women from Stanly County who have distinguished themselves as educators, musicians, athletes, doctors, soldiers, law enforcement officers, elected officials, community leaders and more.
Some of those to be recognized grew up in Stanly County, made significant contributions to their community and then moved on to become well-known outside of Stanly.
Some are not Stanly natives but chose to live and work for a while in this community.
Others have spent their lives here striving to make this community a better place for future generations.
Two of the notable men to be included in the presentation will be E.E. Waddell and Dr. Essex Noel.
Waddell, a well-known educator, served as principal of Kingville School from 1944-1963. The E.E. Waddell Center where the program will be held was named in his honor.
Noel was an early doctor in Stanly County and operated a drug store in Kingville.
Bramlett is not a Stanly County native. He was born in Alabama, lived in Tennessee and then moved to Albemarle just before
entering eighth grade at Albemarle Middle.
He has always been interested in history and likes the challenge of doing research to learn more about people and places.
In preparation for this presentation he sought input from people in varies parts of Stanly County in addition to his own research.
