South men win at Albemarle, claim second in YVC

With a 64-49 win at Albemarle Friday night, the South Stanly men’s basketball team finished the regular season 15-9 and 13-3 in Yadkin Valley Conference play, earning the No. 2-seed going into the conference tournament.

Jaquez Cooke and Tori Colson led four in double figures for the Rebel Bulls with 17 each, while Jacorian Legrande added 11. Justin Gaddy, who missed a number of the games this season with an injury, came off the bench Friday to score 14.

Nhazer Little was top scorer for the Bulldogs (14-11, 11-5) with 10. Albemarle finished in third place in the regular-season standings.

“I’m very proud of this group; they have all accepted their roles and truly play for their teammates every night,” South coach Sean Whitley said. “We accomplished a lot of our regular-season goals. Now, the playoffs bring a new set of goals. If we continue to play to our ability, we will be a tough out moving forward.”

South Stanly hosts No. 7 South Davidson (4-19, 4-12) on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. in the opening round of the conference tournament.

Albemarle will also be at home Tuesday in the opening round of the YVC tournament, hosting No. 6 Uwharrie Charter (6-16, 5-11).
