Bulldogs women win 14th straight in first round of YVC tournament

The Albemarle women’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 2019 Yadkin Valley Conference tournament Monday with a 61-41 home win in the first round over Uwharrie Charter.

Zycoria Tillman led the Bulldogs (24-1) with 20, while Armani Baldwin added 14. Krystin McLendon had a double-double for Albemarle with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Kiana Ridley just missed double figures in points for the Bulldogs, scoring nine.

Natalie Beeson scored 13 to lead the Eagles (8-17), with Mia Leonard adding 11.

Albemarle’s win, the team’s 14th in a row, puts the Bulldogs into the semifinals Wednesday night against No. 5-seeded North Moore, who won at No. 4 South Davidson in the first round, 60-47.

In the other semifinals, No. 2 Gray Stone will face off with third-seeded North Rowan. The Knights advanced with a 40-17 first-round win over South Stanly, while North Rowan eliminated No. 6 North Stanly 51-39.

The finals for the YVC tournament are scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. at South Davidson High School.
