In Tuesday’s opening round of the 2019 Yadkin Valley Conference men’s basketball tournament, South Stanly and North Stanly earned wins to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday.

South Stanly 99, South Davidson 71

South Stanly’s men’s basketball program had not had a team win 16 games in a season since the 2008-09 campaign, when the Bulls finished 16-7 overall, losing in the first round of the state playoffs.

With Tuesday’s 99-70 blowout over No. 6-seeded South Davidson in the opening round of the tournament, the No. 3 Bulls improved to 16-9 on the season.

Chandler Lowder led five in double figures for the Bulls with 23 points. Tori Colson added 17, while Jaquez Cooke and Jacorian Legrande added 12 and 11, respectively. Justin Gaddy also added 10 off the bench for South.

Hayden Hicks led South Davidson (4-20) with 19, while Dylan DeLattre added 16.

The Bulls will take on No. 6-seed Uwharrie Charter, who upset third-seeded Albemarle on the road Tuesday night, 55-49, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at South Davidson.

North Stanly 65, West Montgomery 29

The Comets earned a fourth chance to take on one of the state’s top-ranked 1A teams with Monday’s home win over West Montgomery, 65-29, in the opening round of the tournament.

Carson Lowder led three in double figures for the Comets (16-9) with 18. Senior guard Bryson Childress, who recently went over the 2,000-point career mark, added 16 in the win, while Koby Poole scored 10 for North.

Q.J. Drake was the top scorer for the Warriors (10-11) with 10.

North Stanly will take on YVC top seed North Rowan (22-2), who won at home Tuesday over No. 8 Gray Stone, 70-33, at 8:30 p.m.
