Stanly Gymnastic boys continue season at Sandhills Classic

The Stanly County Gymnastics boys team recently competed in the team’s third competition of the season at the Sandhills Classic hosted by Sandhills Gymnastics.

The boys performed routines on each of the six Olympic events for men’s gymnastics: floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

The SCG boys team practices 8-12 hours per week year-round in order to prepare for competition season.

Cooper Shanes competed in the level 6 division. Shanes placed second on floor with an 8.1 and third on rings. He tied for second on pommel horse and on vault with a vault score of 9.1. Shanes placed first all-around in his age group with a score of 49.5.

Keargan Morris, Evan Ferris, Jordan Hunt and Luke McKibben competed in the level 4 division.

Morris tied for first on floor with a 9.4 and tied for second on parallel bars with a 9.4. He placed first on rings with a 9.2, first on vault with a 9.6 and first on high bar with a 9.8. Morris finished first in the all-around for his age group with a score of 55.3.

Ferris tied for first on floor with a 9.4 and tied for third on high bar with a 9.0. Ferris placed first on pommel horse with a 9.0 and second all-around for his age group with a score of 53.9.

Hunt placed fourth on floor with a 9.2, second on pommel horse with an 8.0 and second on high bar with a 9.0. He tied for fourth on parallel bars with a 9.2. Hunt placed third all-around in his age group with a score of 52.6.

McKibben placed fifth on pommel horse with an 8.3 and scored an 8.8 on vault and parallel bars. He received a medal in the all-around with a score of 48.3.

In the level 4 division, Stanly County placed second in the team competition.

The next competition of the season for the SCG boys team will be in March at the 2019 North Carolina men’s state championships.
