South reports success from Skills USA regional

The South Stanly High Skills USA Club won medals in the Southwest Regional Skills Conference at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College on Feb. 15.

The opening and closing sessions were performed by South students Devin Banks, Levi Coley and Tyler Ostrander. All three are current regional officers.
During the competitive events, 12 out of 14 South competitors earned a medal in their respective contests.

South swept the promotional poster contest with Chelsea Pacheco Lujano winning first, Breanna Hatley taking second, Madison Wood capturing third, Jason Papin winning fourth and Michael Sandy taking fifth-place.

In the principles of technology event, South’s Triston Goodson won the gold medal and Dominic Doty came in second.

Another demonstration based event is action skills and Montgomery Poulos won the gold with his presentation on operating heavy equipment.

Sadye Helms won silver in the medical terminology competition.

In the electronics technology event, South had three medalists with Devin Banks winning third-place, Levi Coley taking the fourth spot and James Harris capturing a fifth-place medal.

The club will travel to Greensboro in early April to compete in the state contest.

The team has a six-year streak of delivering state champions in the technology and leadership events.
