North Stanly senior point guard Bryson Childress continued his march up the NCHSAA record book for points in a season as the No. 21-seeded Comets upset fourth-seeded Starmount Thursday, in overtime, 63-62, in the second round of the state 1A playoffs.

Childress led the Comets (18-10) with 36 points, giving 2,132 career points. According to the NCHSAA record book online, that total puts the senior just ahead of Apex’s Ian Boyd (2,128) for 26th all-time and three behind Bandy’s James McCleave for 25th. Thursday marked the ninth time this season he scored 30 or more in a game and the 15th time he scored at least 20 points.

Carson Lowder and Nalik Veasley each added 12 points for the Comets in the win.

Eric Wiles led three in double figures for the Rams with 19 points; Ethan Barnes added 16 points and Trey Dezern added 12.

The Comets had a chance to win in regulation at the buzzer but missed; in overtime, North led by four with 15 seconds left before the Rams (20-5) cut the lead to one in the final seconds with a three-pointer.

North Stanly will be on the road Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Charter (23-6); the fourth-seeded Eagles advanced to the third round with an 85-52 home win over No. 20 seed North Stokes.
