West softball opens with road wins

The Colts softball team opened the 2019 season with three non-conference road shutout victories against high school squads from larger classifications.

On Feb. 27, the Colts got a one-hit complete-game shutout from sophomore Jordan Hatch, who struck out 17 in a 2-0 win over J.M. Robinson.

She helped her own cause with an RBI triple in the top of the second inning scoring Shelby Barbee. Barbee later scored on a steal of home.

Deanna Waddell took the loss for the Bulldogs allowing two earned runs on four hits.

On Tuesday, Hatch fanned 13 batters with no walks and threw 80 pitches for a seven-inning 4-0 win over the Jesse Carson Cougars.

Rosalyn McRae led the West offense with two hits including an RBI double in the seventh. Kailey Furr, Megan Stockton and Kaitlyn Clark had hits for West.

Thursday night, Hatch made it 19 straight shutout innings allowing one hit in a 11-0 five-inning win over Central Cabarrus. She did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

Barbee added a grand slam and four RBIs while Stockton added a double and drove in three runs.
