The Pfeiffer University softball team earned a road doubleheader split Saturday, falling to Ferrum 6-5 in game one before rallying to take game two 4-2. For the Falcons, the loss was the team’s first this season, ending an eight-game win streak.

In the opening game, Ferrum (6-4) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to take the 6-5 win. Pfeiffer (9-1) scored two runs in each of the first two innings, with the first pair of runs coming on a Makenzie Pennell home run, her league-leading sixth of the season. After Ferrum plated one in its half of the first, Pfeiffer’s Vada Blue Sherrill knocked a two-run double, extending the Falcon lead to 4-1.

Ferrum scored three in the second to tie the game at 4-4 after piecing together three singles to load the bases. The Panthers’ then cleared the bases on a three-run double.

Ferrum added a run in the third to go up 5-4, but the Falcons knotted the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning when Sherrill delivered her second double of the game. Hannah Tyner then singled, scoring Sherrill from second.

The Panthers then took the lead in the sixth and retired the Falcons in order in the seventh, taking the 6-5 win.

Sherrill finshed 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, while Pennell was 1-for-4 with the solo homer.

On the mound, Kiana Millsaps struck out three in 4.2 innings, taking the loss.

In game two, tied at 2-2, the Falcons’ Maranda Benton singled and advanced to second on a Panther error. After a Sherrill walk and stolen base put runners on second and third, a passed ball scored both runners, giving the Falcons the 4-2 lead.

In the home half of the seventh inning, a pair of Pfeiffer errors put runners on, but the Falcons were able to get the lead runner at third on a fielder’s choice, and followed that with a groundout to record the second out. Ferrum walked to load the bases, but Falcon pitcher Kiana Millsaps struck out the final batter to earn the pitching win.

Pennell was 2-for-3 in the second game with a double and two RBI, while Sherrill added a hit and two stolen bases.

The Falcons will host Salem College Tuesday afternoon in a USA South doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Jack Ingram Field in Misenheimer.
