The Stanly County School Board approved a sign-on bonus of $2,500 to help hire new middle school and high school math and science teachers as well as Exceptional Children teachers during its monthly meeting Tuesday.

Board member Vicky Watson presented the motion to the rest of the board. A $500 bonus would be given to the teachers before the school year and the other $2,000 would be given at the end of the year.

“Other counties are doing this and we have to compete with that, too,” Watson said.

The board unanimously approved Watson’s motion. SCS will be able to use the sign-on bonus as a way to hopefully lure teachers to Stanly during an upcoming job fair at UNC-Charlotte.

The school board will meet again at 6 p.m. Monday during which the East Albemarle and Central Elementary school principals will present their findings regarding the proposed tiered school plan, followed by a final public hearing about staggered school start times. The board plans to vote on a final option during the meeting.
