The Pfeiffer University softball team traveled to Raleigh for a USA South doubleheader, splitting the twin bill with Meredith College, falling in game one, 2-0 and winning game two, 5-1.

In game one, Pfeiffer’s potent offense was limited to just three hits. In the first inning, The Falcons put runners on first and second with no outs, but an infield fly followed by a groundout left Pfeiffer (28-4, 9-3 USA South) with runners on second and third with two outs. A pop up ended the inning for Pfeiffer as they stranded both runners.

In the second, Pfeiffer again got a runner to third, but the threat was erased when Meredith (7-19, 4-8) picked off the Falcon runner to end the inning.

Meredith went up 1-0 in the fourth inning. The Angels had back-to-back singles to start the inning and following a Falcon pitching change, got a run across on a double steal attempt.

Another Meredith run crossed in the fifth, when the Angels got a two-out double and then was able to push the run across on an infield single, going up 2-0.

Pfeiffer threatened in the fifth, putting two runners on, but could not score, as a fielder’s choice cut down the Falcon runner at second to end the inning.

The Falcons only managed a single in the seventh with the final out coming on a line drive back to the pitcher.

In game two, Meredith struck in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. Pfeiffer’s Reece Davis then tied the game in the second inning with a solo home run to left field, her fourth round-tripper of the season.

In the third inning, a Meredith error helped push across the first run of the frame for Pfeiffer, making it 2-1 Falcons. RBI singles from Kari Westerbeek and Hannah Tyner then put the Falcons up 4-1.

A fielder’s choice in the fourth inning stretched Pfeiffer’s lead to 5-1. Meredith would be held in check the rest of the way, with Pfeiffer taking the 5-1 win to split the doubleheader.

Kiana Millsaps earned her 20th win of the season, improving to 20-2 overall. She pitched a complete game, scattering six hits, striking out three and giving up just one run.

The Falcons will return home for Senior Day, taking on Averett University on Saturday in a USA South doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Jack Ingram Field.
