A three-run double from Crafton Mansfield in the fifth inning lifted the South Stanly baseball team to an 8-5 Yadkin Valley Conference win over the first-place North Stanly Comets Wednesday night.

South (9-6, 9-2) pulled to within a half-game of the Comets for first in the conference standings with Wednesday’s win. The loss for North (12-2, 9-1) ends an overall 10-game win streak for the Comets and is the team’s first conference loss this season.

Garrett Swink earned the win in relief for South, walking one and striking out five batters in 2.2 innings. Sawyer Smith started for the Bulls and struck out 10 batters giving up four earned runs on two hits.

Carson Lowder took the loss on the mound for North, striking out 11 batters but giving up three earned runs on five hits.

North jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a Hunter Sells RBI double and a sacrifice fly from Drew Little in the top of the first. South answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, including a base-loaded RBI walk drawn by Mabe Campbell, a fielder’s choice and an RBI single from Camern Huneycutt.

The Comets retook the lead on a wild pitch in the third but South retook the lead in the on a passed ball and a fielding error.

In the top of the fifth, Little reached on an error scoring Rhett Lowder to tie the game at 5.

The Bulls charged ahead in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with no outs. On a 2-1 pitch, Mansfield cleared the bases with a double to center.

North and South were scheduled to move Friday’s scheduled game in New London to Thursday because of incoming rain but because of a lack of umpires, the game has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.
