West Stanly Fire Department and Stanly County EMS were dispatched to Walking Stick Road Saturday in reference to an overturned kayak found on the Rocky River, according to the West Stanly Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Emergency responders made contact with a caller who advised they found a kayak washed up on the bank with personal belongings in it.

After investigation, it was determined this was a water rescue event and command post was established at West Stanly Station 1. Capt. Ryan Hanes established command and requested additional resources. Midland, Oakboro and New Salem fire departments were dispatched to various points along the river and additional water personnel were dispatched from Harrisburg Fire Department.

Engine 1 and Rescue 1 crews began searching the river banks toward the Love Mill bridge. About one mile up the river from the incident address, crews located two adults along the river bank. West Stanly crews escorted the individuals to Walking Stick Road, where they were evaluated by Stanly County EMS.
