Norwood Arbor Day Festival kicks off Thursday

Norwood will have its annual Arbor Day Festival this week, with events happening Thursday through Saturday.
This will be the 26th year the town has hosted the festival.
“This is our biggest event of the year,” said Carmen Salmon, Norwood’s finance officer.
She expects between 3,000 and 4,000 people from around the state to show up during the three-day celebration.
On Thursday, the Radio Flyer bluegrass band will perform from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
On Friday, The Tonez will perform from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
On Saturday, there will be a host of different performers: Keith Byrd from 10:45 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.; Loaded Dice from 11:45 a.m. until 1:45 p.m.; Right Turn Clyde from 2:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.; Butch Halpin and the Carolina Sounds Beach Show from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.; and Blackwater Rhythm & Blues Band from 7:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
The stage will be at Town Hall and Marty Walter will be the emcee.
There will be many other events that are taking place throughout the day Saturday.
At Edward’s Field, there will be a Smokey the Bear inflatable, a forestry helicopter, fire and EMS personnel, the Sheriff Office and Explorer Cadets.
At Town Hall, there will be a Norwood Police Humvee. The Rockingham Police Department will have a DWI simulator and a seat belt convincer. Stanly County Mothers Against Drunk Driving will be present along with Safe Kids Stanly County and many vendors.
Behind Norwood Elementary School, JAARs — a North Carolina-based, nonprofit that helps spread and translate the Bible to groups around the world — will take people on helicopter rides from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Behind Town Hall, there will be four inflatables for children from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. as well as the Fossil Fair Dig all day and Graffiti Island sidewalk chalk from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
At the Turner Street Ballfield, VFW Post 6183 will have its annual car show from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Sand Volleyball Tournament at the volleyball courts on College Street begins at 9 a.m.
At Darrell Almond Park, there will be fishing available to children from 9 a.m. until noon.
At the Community Building, there will be a beauty pageant at noon; registration will be from 10 a.m. until noon.
The Center Rural Fire Department will sell barbecue beginning at 10 a.m.
