Looking for a summer camp? Stanly has much to offer

Stanly County has a host of a summer camps coming up.

Summer Day Camp YMCA Pavilion

Summer camp runs in weekly sessions from June 10 through Aug. 21. People can register for one week or all the sessions. Camp is from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

The camp is for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade.

Most of the activities will take place outside and will include swimming and field trips.

Open House will be from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. June 4 at the Pavilion picnic shelter.

The YMCA is partnering with Stanly County Schools Child Nutrition Services to provide two snacks and a free, healthy lunch for a portion of the camp. More information will be available at the Open House.

Full-time (4-5 days a week) costs $160 for non-members of the YMCA ($125 for members) while part-time (1-3 days per week) costs $133 ($98 for members).

Albemarle City Summer Camp

Summer camp runs June 17 through Aug. 9 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the E.E. Waddell Community Center for children ages 7 to 12.

Campers will enjoy swimming, skating, arts and crafts, games and other recreational activities.

Cost is $25 a week per child, plus a $10 registration fee.

Arts Summer Camp 

This camp offered by the Stanly County Arts Council is for students entering first grade through sixth grade.

Sessions will be offered July 15 through July 18 at West Stanly High School and July 22 through July 25 at Stanly Community College.

Camp is from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Students will take classes each day from certified instructors in drama, art, music and dance.

Cost is $85 and includes all materials, a camp T-shirt, snacks and bottled water and a pizza party on July 18 and July 25.

Parents are encouraged to register their children early because the price increases to $100 on May 25.

4-H Summer Blast 

N.C. Cooperative Extension offers 4-H Summer Blast. Registration will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 15 at the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center. Children must be registered at nc.4honline.com before registration day.

Stanly County 4-H will offer 22 summer programs for students. Each vary in price. Some of the multi-day programs include Fit Kids Summer Camp from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 16-18 where kids will learn about health, fitness and nutrition at Gold’s Gym and an overnight trip June 27-28 to Wilmington to visit the UNC-Wilmington campus, Fort Fisher aquarium, saltwater marshes and a boat tour of Masonboro Island.

Some of the one-day activities include learning about horses, cooking and creating recipes in the Chopped kitchen, traveling to Seagrove to learn about pottery and learning about the world and different cultures.

Stanly Community College Camps

Stanly Community College will offer several summer camps for children entering fourth grade through ninth grade.

Children can choose camps suited to their interests: Agribusiness technology, air-conditioning/heating/refrigeration, basketball, cheerleading, collision repair and refinishing, computer-integrated machining, crime scene investigation, engineering technology, graphic design, heavy equipment operations and welding, nail manicuring, self-defense, and simulation and game development.

Costs range from $20 to $50. Classes will be at the Albemarle campus, the E.E. Waddell Center or the Albemarle Public Housing Authority Center.

Pfeiffer STEM Camps

Pfeiffer University will offer two series of STEM camps this summer: one for elementary school students and one for middle and high school students.

Elementary school STEM camps will run June 10-13 and June 17-20 and will include several camps that involve working with Legos to build designs and to strengthen basic math skills, utilizing laptops and other devices to create digital creations, learning about physics and conducting experiments. Each camp lasts three hours and costs $125.

Middle and high school STEM camps will also run June 10-13 and June 17-20.  The first week will offer a neuroscience/neuroanatomy camp, biology camp and a leadership experience camp while the second week will offer a chemistry camp, forensic science camp and another leadership experience camp. The cost of the leadership camp is $250 while the other camps cost $175. Students going into sixth grade through ninth grade have the option of staying on campus for the week (they would be housed in the dorms and enjoy meals in the cafeteria) for $475.
