Postal Service collects more than mail May 11

The United States Postal Service will collect food next Saturday as part of its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.

On May 11, letter carriers across the country, including those in Stanly County, will collect non-perishable food donations left in mailboxes and in post offices.

To donate, just place a box or can of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail that day. The carrier will then collect the donations. The food is sorted and delivered to an area food bank or pantry.

The Albemarle letter carriers will take the food to the Stanly Community Christian Ministry’s food pantry.

“It makes us so happy when we see food sitting in the mailboxes,” said Carrie Simmons, an Albemarle post office letter carrier. “We’re trying to help our community because we love our community.”

According to the USPS website, the food drive is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. The drive has delivered more than 1 billion pounds of food during the last 25 years.
