After the top of the first inning of Friday’s third-round 2A state softball playoff game, the top seed in the Western Region, the West Stanly Colts, found themselves in a position the team has not been in often this season: behind on the scoreboard.

The Colts responded with 13 unanswered runs in the final four innings of a 13-1 five-inning win over the West Stokes Wildcats.

Jordan Hatch allowed one earned run on four hits walking three and striking out 13 batters picking up the win for West Stanly (22-0).

Freshman Ashlyn Hughes led the West Stanly offense driving in five runs including a double while Shelby Barbee added four RBIs including a three-run home run in a seven-run output in the bottom of the fourth.

West Stanly will host No. 8 seed West Wilkes in the third round of the state playoffs. The Blackhawks (21-4) advanced to take on the Colts after winning in the second round over No. 9 Rutherford-Spindale Central, 4-3.
