The North Stanly softball team went on the road Friday night in the second round of the 1A state playoffs and upset the No. 2 seed in the Western Region, the Roxboro Community School Bulldogs, 2-1.

Merris Talbert earned the complete-game win for North Stanly (15-6) striking out 18 batters in the win over Roxboro (18-2).

Both of the Comets’ runs came in the top of the first inning. Singles by Payton Landis and Mimi Selke set up a Devyn Eury RBI single and a Reagan Speight RBI sacrifice fly.

Roxboro’s lone run of the game was an unearned run scored in the bottom of the sixth.

“It was as dominant a pitched game as I recall ever seeing,” North head coach Greg Speight said regarding Talbert’s performance.

“It we catch a foul pop-up, it’s probably a no-hit shutout. I feel fortunate to have been there to see it.”

No. 15 North Stanly will go on the road Tuesday to take on No. 10 Murphy (16-2) who won Friday night at seventh-seeded Lincoln Charter, 4-2 in eight innings.
