The local Safe Kids program was recently honored at the state-wide level.

At its annual conference in Concord last week, Safe Kids NC named Safe Kids Stanly the Coalition of the Year.

“It was very nice to be recognized for our hard work and dedication to keeping the children of Stanly County safe,” said Adam Palmer, the Safe Kids Stanly County coalition coordinator.

Palmer said he didn’t expect to win.

“For us it was out of left field,” he said. “I didn’t have any idea.”

Two of the programs the coalition has implemented Palmer is proud of include fire safety and child passenger safety.

Safe Kids is a national nonprofit organization created in 1988 that works to keep families and communities safe from injuries.

Safe Kids Stanly County was created around 1990-1991, making it the first coalition in the state and one of the first national coalitions, Palmer said.

The Stanly coalition, which is comprised of about 25 employees, received a plaque during the ceremony.
