Commissioners decide on adding additional sheriff’s officer

The Stanly County commissioners decided to allocate around $60,000 for a new officer for the Sheriff’s Office during their budget workshop Tuesday evening.

During last Thursday’s budget workshop, Sheriff Jeff Crisco asked commissioners for two additional officers, totaling around $200,000, but as the commissioners debated the issue, they found they could only afford to find money, about $95,000, for one additional officer.

But the number fell to $60,000 for an extra officer during Tuesday’s meeting because the officer’s vehicle, which would cost around $30,000, would not be included, said County Manager Andy Lucas. The $60,000 would go towards the additional officer plus equipment and uniform.

Lucas said that the commissioners decided to add $12,000 to the sheriff’s budget for part-time salary.

The commissioners also decided to allocate $2,000 to the Board of Elections to go for costs for state-mandated training sessions for the officials.

The commissioners will meet again at 9 a.m. Thursday for more budget discussion.
