A teen drowned Wednesday night at Badin Lake.

Stanly County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Chris Huneycutt said around 7:32 p.m., Stanly County 911 received a call about a possible drowning near the Old Whitney Boat Landing on Badin Lake.

A little more than an hour later, the body of a 17-year-old male was found with the assistance of sonar, Huneycutt said in a press release.

“Further investigation showed that the victim was swimming with two other teens when he went underwater and did not resurface,” Huneycutt said. “There is no indication of alcohol use or any other suspicious factors at this time.”

Because of the victim’s age, his name is not being released without family authorization, Huneycutt said.

“Our thoughts are with the family during this tragic and difficult time,” he said.
