The Stanly Arts Guild has awarded two art scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year.
Winning the Patricia Blake Hartley Scholarship is Jack Williams, son of John Jr. and Nicole Williams of Albemarle.

Williams is a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, majoring in studio art with a concentration in printmaking.

With his application , Williams brought a sculpture of a human leg, designed with metal and wire.

A tennis shoe was designed to cover the foot which had intricate and delicate designs for the toes.

The Hartley scholarship is presented each year to a Stanly County student well-established in a college visual arts program.

Guild president Lorrie Hatley presented a check for $1,000 to be used toward Williams’ tuition for the coming year.

A second award, called The Stanly Arts Guild Scholarship, is awarded annually to a graduating high school senior or freshman in college from Stanly or surrounding counties, who plans to major in visual arts or arts education.

This year’s recipient is Kenia Saldana, a 2019 graduate of West Stanly High School.

Randy Fike, her art teacher, said Saldana consistently embraced challenges of new mediums and a variety of art projects.

She plans to study graphic arts at Stanly Community College this fall and received a check for $1,000 to be applied to college expenses.

She is the daughter of Juana Maria Hernandez and Olegario Saldana from Locust.

The guild members were impressed with her artwork, which included a self portrait and a dog portrait using scratchboard technique.

Another scholarship applicant, Marlen Jaimes, a 2019 graduate of Albemarle High School and art student of Holly Hathcock, was presented with an honorarium for her work.

The guild is pleased that Jaimes is volunteering this summer at The Stanly Arts Guild’s art and gift store, 330 N. Second St., Albemarle.
