Fourth Annual Citizens Police Academy slated to start in September

The Norwood Police Department will have its Fourth Annual Citizens Police Academy beginning on Sept. 10.

During the academy, citizens will learn what it takes to become a police officer. Class topics include patrol duties, criminal and narcotics investigations, crime scene processing and firearms training. Each class is instructed by an officer to ensure the safety of all participants.

“This is a community service type project that builds a positive relationship between members of the community and law enforcement,” Norwood Police Chief James Wilson said. “Participants can ask questions they have that wouldn’t otherwise get answered outside the city.”

Wilson said his favorite part about the class is the time he gets to spend interacting with the citizens of Norwood. Wilson said officers have had a positive impact on academy participants.

“Someone may come in and sign up for this program, and they may not have a high opinion of law enforcement,” Wilson said. “But after this program is over, that whole perception changes, and that’s really refreshing. That’s really nice to see.”

Classes will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Tuesday at Norwood Police Department. Applications for the academy are open to residents and business owners in Norwood. There are only 20 spots available.

Applications are available at Norwood Town Hall. The deadline to apply is Aug. 23.
