Stanfield passes curfew ordinance

The Stanfield Town Council passed a curfew for minors ordinance during its meeting Thursday night.
The ordinance, which was first proposed by Commissioner James Griffin during last month’s meeting, went into effect Friday.
A public hearing was held before the vote.
“I think it’s a success for the city and for the police department, too, to try to help reduce the amount of crime,” Griffin said.
According to the ordinance it will be unlawful for minors, defined as any person who has not reached his or her 18th birthday, to “be in or upon or remain in or upon any public place” in the town between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight and 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
Exceptions to the curfew include if a young person is accompanied by a guardian, or a responsible person over the age of 18 with the guardian’s written permission, if they are traveling in connection with employment, religious activity or school function, temporarily in the town while engaged in interstate travel or trying to get assistance in a medical emergency.
