South Stanly wins YVC women’s golf tourney

The Country Club of Whispering Pines hosted Wednesday’s Yadkin Valley Conferencer women’s golf tournament.

South Stanly came back from seven shots down through the front nine of the 18-hole event to win the tournament championship.

The Bulls finished with a team score of 301 besting Gray Stone by 19 strokes. South trailed 162 to 155 to Gray Stone through the front nine but the Bulls shot 139 on the final nine holes to the Knights’ 165.

Chatham Central was third with 330, followed by North Rowan (391) and North Moore (415).

Kaitlyn Griggs from Gray Stone shot the low round of the tournament earning medalist honors with an 85. She was also named the YVC’s Player of the Year for having the overall lowest scores in the regular season.

South Stanly’s Jackie Burris finished second individually with a 97 while her teammate, Emma Crump, shot 100. Chatham Central golfer Gillan Kitchens finished fourth (103) followed by the Bulls’ Shayne Burleson (104) rounding out the top five.

Also earning All-Conference honors were Chatham’s Courtney Robinson, finishing sixth, and South’s Emily Moss in seventh.

For the Knights, Layla Simpson finished second with 112 followed by Aliza Simpson (119) and Carson Prince (141).
