Locust Police Chief Frank Hartsell has announced his retirement.

At the last city council meeting, officials said Hartsell intends to retire Dec. 29. The search for his successor will begin over the next few weeks.

Council members said Hartsell has spent his entire law enforcement career in Locust. Hired by former chief James Inman in 1991, he has been with the department 28 years, 10 of those as chief.

“We’ve gone through a lot together,” said Councilman Mike Haigler, who has worked with Hartsell both at city hall and in the police department. “You don’t get much better than Frank.”

The council attributed the current strength of its law enforcement services to Hartsell and added that they will further recognize his achievements closer to retirement.

“He has thoroughly earned our respect,” Councilman Roger Hypes said.

Hartsell noted to council members that he intends to stay in the area after his retirement.
