LED signage is once again up for consideration in Locust.

A set of ordinances allowing such signs — which use LED screens to communicate changing messages — will soon go before the city council.

“There are no LED signs in the city right now,” City Administrator Cesar Corea said.

However, local businesses and other groups have asked to install such signs over the past few years, he said.

In fact, the council first considered such an ordinance about a year ago after a local church requested permission to install one. At the time, however, the council had concerns about how to regulate the brightness of such signs and decided to table the issue until they knew more.

“Since then we’ve talked to other cities about how to regulate brightness,” Correa said. “That’s been incorporated into (the proposed ordinances).”

The public will get its first chance to comment on LED signage at a public hearing on Nov. 14.

The hearing will be a part of the council’s regular meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. Anyone wishing to publicly comment on the matter is asked to speak before the council at that time.
