Stanly volleyball teams advance in YVC first round

Monday’s opening round of the 2019 Yadkin Valley Conference volleyball tournament saw three Stanly teams have the opportunity to earn wins on their respective home courts.

Wins by three Stanly YVC teams sets up tonight’s conference semifinals starting at 5 p.m. hosted by North Stanly.

North Stanly 3, Chatham Central 0

The No. 4-seeded Comets advanced to the semifinals with a sweep of the Bears with scores of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-14.

Three Comets (12-12) reached double figures in kills, led by Nicole Lowder’s 13 points. Taegan Lowder added 11 kills and Merris Talbert had 10 kills.

Brinn Kimrey led North with 10 digs and six aces while Payton Landis had 19 assists for the Comets. Alex Childress added 16 assists.

North Stanly will take on top seed Uwharrie Charter at 5 p.m. today.

South Stanly 3, South Davidson 0

Playing at home with the No. 3 seed, the Rebel Bulls (12-12) swept the Wildcats with scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.

The Bulls take on No. 2 seed Gray Stone tonight directly after the Comets – Eagles semifinal matchup.

Gray Stone 3, North Moore 0

Gray Stone (14-4) improved to 14-4 with a win over No. 7 North Moore with scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 25-14.

Freshman Piper Mauldin led the No. 2-seeded Knights with seven kills while Mandilyn Stovanov and Olivia Eldridge added six kills each.

Lannah Huneycutt led Gray Stone with 13 assists.
