Stanly County Board of Elections to hold 2020 kickoff meeting Nov. 5

Though no municipal elections will be held this Tuesday, the Stanly County Board of Elections will have a meeting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its headquarters in the Stanly County Commons to discuss 2020 voting information.

The topics include new photo ID requirements for voting in 2020, candidate filing and petitions, elections security and important dates and information.

“We’re trying to do a little information sharing about the 2020 upcoming primary,” Kim Blackwelder, director of elections for Stanly County, said.

In November 2018, North Carolina voters approved an amendment to the N.C. Constitution to require voters to present photo ID at the polls.

Acceptable photo IDs for 2020 include a driver’s license, passport, approved government employee ID, approved student ID, tribal enrollment card, military ID card or the voter ID card. People can get a voter ID card at the Stanly Board of Elections office.

Blackwelder said candidate filing for 2020 races will begin at noon Dec. 2 and end at noon Dec. 20.

The filing period is earlier than normal — candidates previously filed in February — because the primary is set for March 3 instead of in May.

Ballots will be mailed out for the primary on Jan. 13. The deadline for registering to vote for the primary is Feb. 7.

At the meeting, Board of Elections members will discuss the steps they take to secure the election process and go over various forms of security, including equipment security and cybersecurity.
