Albemarle downed in fourth quarter by Montgomery Central

The Albemarle varsity football team hosted the newly combined varsity teams of Montgomery Central Friday night where the Timberwolves posted the new program’s first win over the Bulldogs, 34-27.

Albemarle (4-7) went back and forth with Montgomery Central (4-7) in the game with both teams answering each other putting points on the board.

The Timberwolves opened with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with the Bulldogs’ Julius Smith later answering with a 7-yard TD run.

Albemarle led 14-13 on a 25-yard TD pass from Antonio Burns to Josh Smith before Montgomery answered with two touchdowns to retake the advantage. Burns scored a touchdown late in the first half to pull the Bulldogs within eight points, 27-19.

Eventually, Albemarle rallied to tie the game with another Burns TD and a two-point conversion with 6:52 left in the fourth quarter.

The Timberwolves scored in the final two minutes to earn the victory.

Albemarle will look to continue its season next week after the state playoff brackets are announced Saturday.
