Height continues to be at the center of success for the West Stanly women’s basketball team. The play of the team’s posts players made the difference in an 49-38 non-conference win over North Stanly.

The final 55 seconds of the game were delayed 12 minutes when a fire alarm went off in the gym. The stands were cleared and players were taken off the court. No fire was found and the game resumed.

Lexi Goode led North Stanly with 17 points while Nyleiah White added 14 points.

West plays its second home game in as many nights Tuesday hosting Wheatmore while North (0-2) hosts East Rowan Wednesday.

“We really want to win the conference tournament and were going for the Stanly (title) as well,” Bishop said.

“This team has so much potential. They see it and know it but sometimes they just get lost in the moment,” Horn said.

The front court of Dani Moss, Asnlyn Hughes and Carmen Bishop accounted for 30 of the points for West (3-1). Bishop and Moss led with 12 points each.

Regarding the taller Moss, Colts head coach Chad Horn said she has the size and quickness to play either small or power forward.

“(She can) cause a mismatch for a post player,” Horn said, noting she has been battling a cold for a couple of weeks.

Horn also talked about Bishop’s play saying the team had talked about moving her from a guard to more of a post position.

“Obviously she can high jump pretty well so we played around with that and she found a niche there over the holiday. She played well and really calmed the game down for us,” Horn said

“We really had to move the ball around…we had to have good moves and keep the ball moving,” Bishop said about the Colts’ offense in the win.

The game started well for the hosts with an 8-3 run, forcing an early North timeout. The Comets answered with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes and led after one quarter, 13-12.

West rallied in the second outscoring the Comets 15-7 to lead at halftime, 27-20.

The Comets got to within six with 2:30 left, 44-38, forcing a late Colts timeout.

A Kailey Furr three with 1:42 left put the Colts back up nine as West went on to the win.
