A tanker overturned around 7 a,.m. Wednesday along West Main Street near the entrance to Stanly Community College, resulting in the temporarily closure of the road.

Altron Miller, of Greensboro, was driving along West Main Street when his 2018 Kenworth tanker ran off the right shoulder of the road and struck a stop sign. The tanker overturned and came to rest on its side.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Miller, who works for Puryear Tank Lines Inc. in Wilmington, was taken to Atrium Health Stanly.

There was about 6,000 gallons of liquid asphalt that spilled, Albemarle Fire Marshal Michael Roark said. The tank on the trailer was severely damaged. The leak came from the spillway cap at the top of the tanker and emptied all of the contents of the tank down the embankment and into a drainage ditch that runs under West Main Street.

The city made contact with Puryear Tank Lines, which has an in-house hazmat cleanup company, Roark said. The units arrived on scene later Wednesday morning.

Roark said cleanup efforts are ongoing with the hopes to have the entirety of the spill cleaned by Sunday.

SCC President Dr. John Enamait said that due to the location of the crash, the entrance to the main campus was not accessible due to the closure of West Main Street. He said the college opened at 1 p.m. due to the accident.
