With Friday’s 67-56 Yadkin Valley Conference road win at Uwharrie Charter, the North Stanly men’s basketball team remained undefeated in YVC play.

It was the Comets’ fifth win in the last six games.

Koby Poole led the Comets (5-3, 3-0 YVC) with 23 points, 16 coming in the second half including 3-of-3 from the free-throw line.

Dyson Bell added 13 points, nine coming in the first half, while Clay Hatley and Doug Smith each added 10 points.

Cam Fordham led the Eagles (2-6, 0-3) with 12 points and Zane Caudle added 11 points.

Head coach Todd Helms said the Comets played good defense throughout the game and were able to pull the team’s starters out midway through the final period.

“Doug Smith was the standout, stepping up by getting big rebounds and scoring when we needed it,” Helms said.

Helms noted four sophomores scored in double digits.

The Comets take on Mountain Island Charter (3-3) at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the opening round of the Laurie Ann Cruse Christmas Classic at Mount Pleasant.

“We will have to play mistake-free basketball to win,” Helms said.

“Mountain Island Charter is highly athletic and will try to control the boards.”
