New London commissioners received an update about the town’s new park at its regular January meeting.

Mayor Tate Daniels said recent wet weather has severely hampered the contractor (Lynn Thomas Grading) from paving.

“The deadline date for completing the paving is Feb. 22, but I’d rather give them an extension so we can have it done right,” Daniels said.

Daniels noted that a number of trees have been planted, but other construction, such as that of bathrooms, is on hold until the paving can be done.

“Until the temperatures and ground conditions improve, I’d rather hold off,” he said.

Daniels continued his presentation with illustrations of two proposed playground equipment schemes, as provided by Carolina Recreation and Design. Both designs, which include swings and a multi-activity structure suited for ages 5 to 12, would be installed and assembled by the designer.

“The safety surfacing (mulch) required under the equipment would be our responsibility to pay for and install,” Daniels said.

No formal action was taken, pending receipt of further information from the paving and playground contractors.

In other action:

● Daniels informed commissioners that the graduation date for Tarheel Challenge Academy will be March 13.

● Town Clerk Susan Almond announced the town’s annual audit had been completed, and that a full report would be presented by the auditor at the February meeting.

● Almond also reminded commissioners that New London will host the Stanly County Local Government Liaison Meeting on Jan. 28.

The next meeting of New London commissioners will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at Town Hall.
