The Stanly County School Board Facilities Committee approved a motion Wednesday evening to donate a small portion of land next to West Stanly Middle School to North Carolina Department of Transportation to construct a roundabout.

The land, which is less than a quarter of an acre, is at the intersection of Running Creek Church Road and Bethel Church Road. A roundabout will eventually be created at the intersection.

The committee decided to donate the land in lieu of $1,975 NCDOT was going to pay for the land.

“This is critical in my opinion because that stop sign is terrible and is so far off the road when you’re coming along,” Facilities Chairman Anthony Graves said.

Graves said a recommendation will be made to the full board at the next school board meeting to donate the land.

SCS Director of Facilities and Maintenance Todd Bowers said the construction of the roundabout should start sometime in the summer.
