Stanly swimmers qualify for regionals

This Saturday at the Greensboro aquatic center, swimmers representing schools in Stanly will be competing for the opportunity to swim in the 1A/2A state meet the following weekend.

Gray Stone

The Knights, champions of the Yadkin Valley Conference, will be represented by 11 swimmers in individual events along with several relay teams.

Gray Stone women swimming at regionals include Kinsey Cook in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly while Katherine Jolly will also swim in the 200 free.

Riley Gleason qualified for the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke while Isabella McGee qualified in both the 100 free and backstroke. Payton Lorch qualified in the 100 free and 500-yard freestyle.

The Knights’ relay teams in the 200-yard individual medley (IM), 200 free and 400 free will also compete.

On the boys’ side, Kai Laster will swim in the 200 IM and 100 back while Cole Stinnett will also swim in the 200 IM. Jordan Engen qualified for the 50-yard freestyle spring while Cory Nunes qualified in both the 100 yard butterfly and backstroke. Christopher Kafitz and Tristan Montemayor both qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke while Kafitz also qualified in the long-distance 500 free.

The 200 IM, 200 free and 400 free relay teams from the Knights also qualified.

North Stanly

The Comets will have eight different swimmers at regionals including Emily Almond in the 100-yard free, Kathryn Carpenter in the 50 free and 100 back, Alex Childress in the 50 and 100 free and Rachel Gibson in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.

Maci Holshouser will swim the 200-yard freestyle and 100 back, while Colbie Lentz and Nicole Lowder are scheduled to swim both the 50 and 100 free. Kelly smith will swim both the 200 and 500-yard free.

Three Comet relay teams will compete as well: the 200 IM, 200 and 400 free.

From North Stanly’s men’s squad, Jaxon Herlocker will swim the 500 free while Alex Huneycutt is in the 50-yard freestyle.

The team of Eli Williams, Logan Aldridge, Herlocker and Huneycutt will compete in the 200 IM and 400 free.

West Stanly

The Colts had two individual entries on the women’s side with Abby Phillips, the Rocky River Conference Swimmer of the Year, qualifying in the 100 and 200 free. Vanessa Perez qualified for regionals in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Jordan Hatch, Anna Marks and Karley Shaffer will also represent the Colts as parts of the team’s 200 IM, 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay squads.
