Chamber selects Asciutto, Lewis as its Citizen, Ambassador of the Year

At the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting Feb. 26, the Citizen of the Year and Ambassador of the Year will be honored.
The Stanly County Citizen of the Year honor will go to Peter Asciutto, owner of Vac & Dash in downtown Albemarle. Last year’s winner, Charlotte Maness, recently informed him about the honor.
“I was really surprised and humbled when Charlotte Maness came in the store and told me,” he said. “I didn’t think I would ever be thought of to get something like that.”
Peter Asciutto has been named the Chamber’s Citizen of the Year.
Asciutto, who moved to Albemarle from Florida in 1998, is currently running for county commissioner. He was previously a commissioner from 2012 to 2016.
Aside from his business, Asciutto is active in the community. He organizes running events throughout the year and was one of the original members that helped create the Uwharrie Running Club in 2005. He is also an active member of the Albemarle Rotary Club.
Asciutto will be the 24th recipient of the Citizen of the Year honor.
The Chamber’s Ambassador of the Year, which is presented to a member of the community who has represented the Chamber the most during the previous year at ribbon cuttings, open houses and other events, will go to Sylvia Lewis, who will receive the award for the second year in a row.
“I work with such a great group of Ambassadors, and every one of them is equally deserving of this,” she said in an emailed statement to The Stanly News and Press. “I certainly never expected to win back-to-back awards. I love working with the Chamber.”
Sylvia Lewis has been named the Chamber’s Ambassador of the Year for the second year in a row.
A graduate of Wingate University, where she earned a bachelor;s degree in Business Management, Lewis also attended South Piedmont Community College where she earned her IT Networking Diploma.
She is director for career technologies as well as a networking instructor at Stanly Community College. Lewis has worked at the college since 2005.
Lewis serves on the Board of Directors for the Coltrane LIFE Center in Concord and serves as secretary on the Coltrane Stanly Committee, which is working to bring an adult day care center to Stanly.
The special guest speaker for the chamber meeting will be Kenny Flowers, assistant secretary for rural economic development for the N.C. Department of Commerce.
The meeting will be at noon Feb. 26 at Atrium Health Stanly.
