In Yadkin Valley Conference basketball semifinal matchups at South Davidson Wednesday night, the Gray Stone women faced Uwharrie Charter while the North Stanly men took on top-seeded Chatham Central.

Women’s Basketball

The Knights earned a chance to avenge the team’s only loss of the season after Wednesday’s 43-31 win over No. 4 seed Uwharrie Charter.

Olivia Payne led Gray Stone (22-1) with 17 points while Jenna Robinson and Danika Ray added eight points each.

The Knights trailed after three quarters, 29-25 but rallied to outscore the Eagles (16-9) by 16 points in the final period.

With the win, Gray Stone advances to the YVC finals to take on North Rowan, the only team to post a win against the Knights this season. The Cavs advanced with a win over Uwharrie Charter, 50-35.

The game will be Saturday with tipoff scheduled for 12 p.m. at South Davidson.

Men’s Basketball

The Comets’ run in the conference tournament ended Wednesday night in a 76-65 loss to top-seeded Chatham Central.

Koby Poole was one of four Comets in double figures scoring 19 points. Nathan Little and Cooper Hogan added 13 and 12 respectively off the bench for North Stanly (14-11) while Dyson Bell scored 11 points.

Reston Cox led four in double figures for the Bears (21-5) with 25 points including 13 in the opening period.

North trailed by eight after one quarter but got within four at halftime, 36-32. The Comets were outscored in the third quarter by 11 points.

The Bears advanced to take on No. 2 seed North Rowan for the YVC tourney title as well as the No. 1 seed from the conference into the state playoffs.

North Stanly will await a possible at-large bid as the NCHSAA is scheduled to announce the brackets Sunday afternoon.
