SPORTS ROUNDUP: March 7-8
The spring schedule for Stanly’s high school teams continued with games Wednesday and Thursday.
Women’s Soccer
Gray Stone 9, Chatham Central 0
After rain forced postponement of the Knights’ opening game at North Moore, Gray Stone got its schedule underway Wednesday. The Knights shut out Chatham Central, 9-0, in a Yadkin Valley Conference matchup.
Anna-Grace Sumner led Gray Stone with three goals and an assist while Peyton Disser added two goals. Taylor Query, Morgan Trexler, Shayla Whitley, Christina Gentile each added a goal.
Goalkeepers Angelina Lappin and Caroline Garner combined for the shutout.
Gray Stone plays at South Stanly at 6 p.m. Monday.
Baseball
South Stanly 5, Chatham Central 4
Switching home dates, the Bulls hosted the Bears Wednesday night and opened with a walk-off win.
Crafton Mansfield and Hayden Brown had two hits each to lead South (1-0, 1-0 YVC). Cameron Bowers earned the win in relief, striking out three and not allowing a hit in 2.1 innings on the mound.
Sawyer Smith, who started on the hill for the Bulls, scored the winning run for South. Trailing 4-3 in the seventh, Smith scored on a dropped fly ball.
North Stanly 11, Olympic 0
Wake Forest signee Rhett Lowder came within one batter of throwing five perfect innings in an 11-0 five-inning win Thursday.
Lowder walked the next to last batter but got a groundout to short to end the game, striking out 11 batters for the win.
Nic Melton went 3-for-3 at the plate for North with three RBIs while Colby Hammer, Luke Shaver and Lowder combined for five hits driving in six runs.
Men’s Tennis
Gray Stone 6, Chatham Central 3
The Knights improved to 3-0 on the season and in YVC play with a 6-3 home win over Chatham Central.
