Editor’s Note: A regular feature of The Stanly News & Press many years ago was a spot where we would take a look back at news makers of the past. The feature, appearing last roughly around 20 years ago as SNAP Back In Time, makes its return this week. During 2020, The SNAP will celebrate its 140th year of covering Stanly County people. In honor of 140 years, The SNAP will focus on events from 40 years ago. Later in the year, we will take a look back at events further back in time.

General Signal became the first new member of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce’s membership campaign. The Chamber hoped to land 50 new members in .

Vocational students of Stanly County Schools were working on completing a house in Windsor Hills off Aquadale Road.

Ernest H. Morton Jr. and David L. Grigg announced the opening of a law office on West North Street.

From the issue dated Friday, March 21, 1980:

Tony Underwood, 14, was the 1980 champion speller of Albemarle City Schools.

He also won the 1979 Spelling Bee.

The runner-up was Trina Brooks, who misspelled “manually.” Underwood spelled it and “mysterious” for the win.

The Uwharrie Players’ production of “Godspell” was to open Saturday.

Cast members included Rick McCollister, David Compton, Tommy Aldridge, Barbara Burleson, Elizabeth Cook, Reed Furr, Dennis Gouse, Susie Johnson, Jeannie Phillips and Terry Welch Wood.
